Cardwright help: cards, Anki, backups and Pro
Short answer: Highlight text on a web page, click the Cardwright icon, type an answer or click words to blank them, and click Add card. To send cards to Anki, keep the Anki app open with the AnkiConnect add-on installed. Cards live only in your browser, so use Backup and Restore to keep them safe or move them to another computer.
1. Install
- Open Cardwright on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome.
- To keep the icon in view, click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome’s toolbar and pin Cardwright.
Cardwright asks for no access to your sites at install: it reads the page only when you click its icon. Your cards are stored in your browser, with no account.
2. Make your first card
- On a web page, highlight the sentence you want to remember, then click the Cardwright icon. The text you highlighted appears in the editor.
- Choose the kind of card:
- Question and answer: type the answer in Back (answer).
- Fill-in-the-blank: click the words you want to hide. ✨ Auto-blanks suggests blanks for you, and you can click any word to change them. This kind of card needs no separate answer.
- Check the Deck the card goes into, or click + New to start one, then click Add card.
If you open Cardwright without highlighting anything, you can type the question yourself. To study, open the Cards tab and click Start review, then Show answer and Again or Good. Cardwright uses your answers to decide when to show each card again. Decks can be renamed or deleted next to the deck list; the last remaining deck cannot be deleted.
3. The optional “+ Add card” button
Cardwright can show a small + Add card button on the page whenever you highlight text, so you can collect cards while you read. It is off until you switch it on.
- Click ⚙ (Tools & backup) in the Cardwright popup, then Selection button · Off. You may also see an Enable offer at the top of the popup; it does the same.
- Chrome asks whether Cardwright may access the sites you visit. This is needed to draw the button on those pages and read the text you highlight. Allow it, and the switch reads Selection button · On.
- Highlight at least three characters on a page, then click + Add card. The button says “Saved — click the Cardwright icon”.
- Click the Cardwright icon within five minutes. The saved text is waiting in the editor; finish the card and click Add card.
Only the latest saved selection is kept. To switch the button off, click the same switch again; Cardwright then gives the site access back to Chrome. If you decline Chrome’s question, the button simply stays off.
4. Send to Anki
Send to Anki puts the current deck straight into the Anki desktop app on your computer. It needs two things:
- The Anki app is open.
- The free AnkiConnect add-on is installed in Anki: in Anki choose Tools → Add-ons → Get Add-ons, enter the code
2055492159, then restart Anki.
Then, in Cardwright, pick the deck, click ⚙ (Tools & backup) and Send to Anki. The first time, Chrome asks whether Cardwright may connect to the Anki app on your own computer (127.0.0.1); allow it. Cardwright creates a deck of the same name in Anki, adds two note types called “Cardwright Basic” and “Cardwright Cloze”, and tags every card cardwright. Cards already in that Anki deck are skipped, and the message says how many were sent and how many were already there. A “::” in a deck name becomes “_” in Anki.
5. Export files for Anki or Quizlet
No Anki app open? Use a file instead. Both buttons are on the Cards tab and export the current deck:
- Export · Anki downloads a .tsv file. In the Anki desktop app choose File → Import and pick it; the file already names the note type and the deck; if that deck doesn’t exist in Anki yet, pick or create it on the import screen.
- Export · Quizlet downloads a .txt file and also copies the cards to your clipboard. In Quizlet choose Create set → Import and paste. Each blank of a fill-in-the-blank card becomes its own Quizlet card.
To export every deck at once, use All decks → Anki or All decks → Quizlet under ⚙. They download several files, and Chrome may ask you to allow multiple downloads: click Allow.
6. Backup, restore and moving to another computer
Your cards live only in the Chrome profile that made them. They do not sync between computers, and removing the extension removes them, so back up from time to time.
- Click ⚙ (Tools & backup) → Backup. Cardwright downloads a file named like
cardwright-backup-2026-10-16.jsonwith your decks, cards, review progress and study stats. - On the other computer, install Cardwright, click ⚙ → Restore and choose that file. You see “Backup restored”.
Restoring replaces the deck list with the one in the backup, and a deck with the same name is overwritten. If the computer you restore on already has cards you want to keep, back those up first. Pro is not part of the backup: on a new computer, activate your key again.
7. The free limit
Every feature is free for up to 25 cards and 3 decks. The limit only affects making new cards and decks: you can always review, export and back up everything you already have. Cards you have sent to Anki with Send to Anki no longer count toward the 25, and deleting cards frees room too. Pro removes the limit for good.
8. Common problems and fixes
“Nothing to capture here”
Chrome does not let extensions read its own pages, the Chrome Web Store or PDF files. Open a regular web page and highlight the text there. Your decks and reviews still work on any page.
Highlighting in Google Docs or another online editor captures nothing
Editors that draw their text themselves, Google Docs among them, do not hand over a normal text selection. Copy the text, open Cardwright and paste it into the Front (question) field.
Only part of my selection was captured
Cardwright captures the first 4,000 characters of a selection and tells you when it cut a long one. For a card, a sentence or a short paragraph works best anyway.
The “+ Add card” button does not appear on the page
Check that ⚙ → Selection button reads On; if Chrome’s question was declined, or the site access was removed at chrome://extensions, it switches itself off. Reload tabs that were already open when you switched it on. Highlight at least three characters. The button does not appear inside embedded frames, nor on pages Chrome keeps off-limits, such as its own pages and PDFs.
I clicked “+ Add card”, but the card is not in my deck
The button only saves the selection; the card is made in the popup. Click the Cardwright icon within five minutes, check the text in the editor and click Add card.
“Can’t reach Anki” when I click Send to Anki
Open the Anki desktop app and make sure the AnkiConnect add-on is installed (code 2055492159 under Tools → Add-ons → Get Add-ons), then restart Anki and try again. If Cardwright says AnkiConnect is too old, update the add-on in Anki. If Anki shows its own confirmation, approve it there and click Send to Anki again. If Cardwright says it needs permission to talk to the Anki app, click Send again and allow Chrome’s question.
My fill-in-the-blank card did not keep the answer I typed
A fill-in-the-blank card has no separate answer: the hidden words are the answer. When you type one anyway, Cardwright warns you first, and a second click on the button saves the card without it. To keep a typed answer, un-hide the words and save a question-and-answer card instead.
“Couldn’t save — storage is full or unavailable”
The last change was not saved. Make a backup straight away (⚙ → Backup) so nothing else is at risk, then try again. If it keeps happening, write to us.
My cards are not on my other computer
Cards are kept only in the browser that made them and do not sync. Move them with Backup on the first computer and Restore on the second, as described above.
9. Pro: buy, activate, refund
Pro is a one-time $4.99 purchase, not a subscription. It removes the 25-card and 3-deck limit; every other feature is already free.
Buy
- Click Get Pro on Cardwright’s Pro screen, or use the pricing section of the product page. The secure checkout opens on our site.
- Pay. Checkout is run by Paddle, our Merchant of Record, which also sends your receipt; the charge may appear on your statement as Paddle.
- You land on a page showing your licence key. Copy it, and keep that page’s link: it carries your order reference, so reopening it shows the key again. The key is not sent by email.
Activate
- Open Cardwright and click Get Pro at the top of the popup, or ⚙ (Tools & backup) → Pro. If the Pro screen with the key box opens, go on to the next step. If a checkout page opens instead, close it — don’t pay twice: your copy is version 1.0.1, where the key box appears only when you try to add a 26th card or a 4th deck. Chrome installs the fixed version (1.0.2) automatically within a few hours of its release, or email info@bilingoplus.com with your order number and we’ll activate it with you.
- Paste the key into the Paste your license key… box and click Activate. You see “Pro is active — thank you!”.
If Cardwright says the key does not look right, copy it again from your purchase page. If it cannot reach the licence server, check your connection and try again in a minute; that is not a problem with your key. The same key unlocks Pro on your other computers. Cardwright re-checks it about once a week and keeps working offline in between.
Lost your key?
Reopen the purchase page from the link you kept; it shows the key again. If you no longer have the link, email info@bilingoplus.com with the email address you paid with, or the order reference from your Paddle receipt, and we will send it.
Cancel or refund
There is nothing to cancel: Pro is a single payment with no renewal. You can ask for a refund within 14 days of your purchase, for any reason; see the Refund Policy. After a refund the key is revoked and Cardwright returns to the free plan within about a week, the next time it checks the key. Your cards stay where they are, and you can still review, export and back them up.
