HARScope help
Short answer: Install HARScope from the Chrome Web Store and click its icon. A HARScope tab opens: drop a .har file on it or click Open HAR file…. You get a request table with a waterfall, one-click checks for failed, slow and heavy requests and redirects, filters, full request details and Clean & save… for a copy with secrets replaced. Everything runs on your computer. Questions: info@bilingoplus.com.
1. Install
- Open HARScope on the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome.
- To keep the icon in view, click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome's toolbar and pin HARScope.
- Click the HARScope icon. It opens HARScope's own page in a new tab.
HARScope asks for no permissions, so Chrome shows no permission request when you add it. No Chrome at hand? The same viewer runs on the web as the HAR analyzer.
2. Open a HAR file
Drop the file anywhere on the HARScope page, or click Open HAR file… and pick it. HARScope reads HAR 1.2 files: the JSON format that browser DevTools export. While a file loads, HARScope shows Reading …. If you still need a file, see how to create a HAR file.
3. The summary bar
Above the table, HARScope shows the number of requests, how much was transferred and the time span of the recording. Under that is a row of checks. Each one is a filter: click it to show only those requests, click it again to show all.
- … failed: requests with a 4xx or 5xx status, or no status at all. Requests with no status come first, then the highest status codes.
- … slow (≥ 1 s): requests that took one second or more, slowest first. WebSocket connections and event streams stay open by design, so they are not counted.
- … heavy (≥ 1 MB): responses of 1 MB or more, largest first.
- … redirects: 301, 302, 303, 307 and 308 responses, and other 3xx responses that name a target. 304 Not Modified is a cache answer, not a redirect.
The last chip shows the secrets HARScope found, for example Contains secrets: 12 cookies · 3 auth headers — clean before sharing. Click it to open the clean dialog.
4. The request table and the waterfall
Each row is one request, with the columns Name, Status, Method, Type, Size, Time and Waterfall.
- Waterfall: a bar for each request on a shared time line, so you can see what started when and what ran long. Failed requests get a red bar and slow ones an amber bar, and slow times and heavy sizes are highlighted in their columns.
- Sorting: click a column header to sort. Click again to reverse the order, and a third time to go back to the recorded order. Size and Time sort largest first.
- Keyboard: ↑ and ↓ move through the list, Enter opens a request, Esc closes the details.
The table only draws the rows on screen, so files with thousands of requests stay quick.
5. Filters and search
- Search box (Filter by URL…): next to it, choose in URLs, or in headers & bodies too to search request and response headers and bodies as well.
- All domains: show one host, with its number of requests.
- All types: for example js, css, html, json, img, font.
- All methods: GET, POST and so on.
- All status codes: 2xx, 3xx, 4xx, 5xx or errors / no status.
Filters combine with each other and with the summary chips. The counter on the right shows how many requests match, for example 24 / 310 shown.
The body search looks through the first 200,000 characters of each body and skips responses stored in base64.
6. Request details
Click a row to open its details on the right:
- Copy URL, Copy as cURL and, when there is one, Copy response.
- General: URL, method, status, remote address, type, size, time and start time.
- Redirect chain: every hop in time order, when the request is part of a redirect. A loop is marked redirect loop: the same address comes back.
- Request headers, Response headers and Query string.
- Request payload and Response body. JSON is formatted; switch with Raw and Pretty. Images are shown as a preview.
- Timings: each phase, with a bar that shows where the time went.
Copy as cURL copies the request as recorded, cookies and authorization headers included. Treat the copied command like a password.
Bodies are shown up to about 2 million characters each, and single header values up to 20,000 characters. Longer content is cut, with a note saying so.
7. Copy report
Copy report puts a short Markdown summary on your clipboard for a support ticket: request counts, failed, slowest and largest requests (up to 10 each) and redirect chains. Secret-looking URL parameters are replaced with REDACTED in the report. If the file itself still holds secrets, the report says so at the end.
8. Clean & save
- Click Clean & save… in the top bar.
- In Clean this HAR before you share it, tick what to replace. Each option shows how many values it found. Options with nothing to replace are greyed out.
- Click Save cleaned copy.
The options are cookies; authorization, token and API-key headers; tokens and keys in URLs; request bodies and WebSocket messages; response bodies (unticked by default); and tokens inside the bodies you keep. Values become REDACTED and names stay. The copy is saved through your browser's normal download as yourfile.cleaned.har. Your original file is not changed.
HARScope matches names and token shapes, so a secret under an unusual name can slip through. Skim the copy before you send it. The full list of what is and is not replaced is in how to sanitize a HAR file.
9. Privacy and permissions
- No permissions. HARScope cannot read the websites you visit. Clicking its icon only opens its own page.
- No network requests. The page's security policy blocks them, so the file has nowhere to go.
- Nothing kept. The file is read in memory and is gone when you close the tab. There is no account, no analytics and no tracking in the extension.
- The web version runs the same code inside a frame that is not allowed to make network requests either. The bilingoplus.com page around it uses the site's analytics. Details are in the privacy policy.
10. Languages
The extension follows Chrome's language. It is available in English, Spanish, Russian, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Japanese and Korean. In any other language it shows English. The web analyzer is in English.
11. Troubleshooting
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| That doesn't look like a valid HAR (JSON parse failed). | The file is not valid JSON. A hand edit may have broken it, or the file is cut short | Export the HAR again; after a hand edit, check quotes and commas |
| No log.entries found — is this a HAR 1.2 file? | The file is JSON but not a HAR | Export again from the browser's Network panel |
| This HAR file contains no requests. | The recording was empty | Keep DevTools open on the Network panel, reload and reproduce the problem, then export |
| Could not read that file. | The browser could not read the file | Open it again; if it keeps failing, export the HAR again |
| Could not copy — select the text and press Ctrl+C | The clipboard was not available | Select the text and copy it by hand |
| (empty) under Response body | The file holds no body text for that request | Nothing to fix in HARScope: the content is not in the file |
12. Still stuck?
Write to info@bilingoplus.com or use the support page. Tell us your Chrome version and which message you see. Please do not attach a HAR file that still contains secrets: clean it first, or describe the problem without it.
Questions
Does HARScope upload my HAR file?
No. The extension has no permissions, and its page is not allowed to make network requests. The file is read in your browser and forgotten when you close the tab.
Which HAR files can it open?
HAR 1.2 files, the JSON format that Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari export. The file must contain a log with an entries list.
Why is the interface in English when my Chrome is in another language?
The extension follows Chrome's language and is translated into 14 languages. If your language is not one of them, it shows English. The web analyzer on bilingoplus.com is in English only.
Does Clean & save change my original file?
No. It saves a new copy whose name ends in .cleaned.har. The file you opened stays as it was.
